Classroom Chatter
Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a wonderful break.

FORGOTTEN LUNCHES: Starting immediately, students who do not have a lunch ticket or money will be able to borrow from the office providing there is not an outstanding balance due for lunch tickets. If your child forgets his/her hot lunch ticket or has used them all, he/she may bring $2.25 to school and purchase a ticket that day from the office staff. Students must have exact change to purchase a ticket; no change will be given. If a child has no lunch, no money and the parent cannot be contacted, he/she may borrow from school office, but only twice per trimester. Students will no longer be able to borrow lunch tickets from the lunchroom staff.

Cursive writing: We are finishing our cursive writing workbooks in the next week or so. Once we are finished, students will be required to complete all work in cursive. We will continue with some extra cursive practice in the weeks that follow the completion of the workbook for maintenance.

Spelling
This week is lesson 16. These words are 1+1+1 words ending with -ing or
-ed. Students already learned in english that 1+1+1 words are words that have one vowel, one consonant after that vowel and one syllable. The test will be Friday. The list is in the spelling folder.

English
We finished our holiday stories the last week before break. Hopefully your child shared their story with you. We will start Unit 4 in english this week. Unit 4 teaches about adjectives and adverbs. This week students will learn what adjectives are.

Reading
We will finish our Eye on Ancient Egypt books this week. We will begin a new book, Tut's Mummy. This book concentrates on King Tut. We also will begin work in lesson 4 in our reading workbooks.

Science
We will continue with our space unit. This week we will learn what shuttle life is like and living in space. Students will also begin learning about the Moon.

Social Studies
We finished up chapter 2 that last week before break with a test. Before moving on to our next unit of study, we will learn and read about the city of Tokyo, Japan and compare this community to the communities we studied in chapter 2. We will have a Japan Day on Wednesday. Students are asked to bring in a pillow to sit on, wear a bath robe or kimono, and bring in any type of Japanese food for us to taste. Students will be participating in some Japanese activities such as making origami (the art of paper folding) and water coloring Mt. Fuji. We will be working on the floor that day, so students can bring in a bed pillow to sit on.

Math
We will continue with chapter 4. This week students will be reading and learning what about stem and leaf plots. We will do some problem solving by using different graphs to show data. We also will be working with probability, outcomes, and evaluating fairness using spinners. This week we will be taking the x7 mad minute. Next week we will be testing out of chapter 4.
