Classroom Chatter
PICNIC: Our 3rd grade picnic will be on Monday, June 4th. A hot dog lunch will be provided. If your child does not want to eat a hog dog, please send them with an alternate cold lunch. There will not be cafeteria hot lunch service.

YEARBOOKS: Yearbooks will be handed out to students on June 5th. Any students who did not purchase a yearbook may do so on Tuesday; they will go on sale after morning announcements. The cost will be $11.00 and children wishing to purchase should have exact amount.There is a limited supply and 5th grade gets to buy first, then 4th, and 3rd last. (Almost all of my students purchased one FYI).  Prairieview yearbook orders were not paid for at registration. There will also be autograph pages for anyone who did not purchase a yearbook as well as students can us their scrapbooks they made for autographs!

This is our final week of curriculum. We will be finishing up our units as the week comes to an end. Thank you to everyone who sent in your child with a glue stick. It will help us out so much when we are putting our scrapbooks together!

Spelling
We will spend this week practicing some 4th grade spelling words by playing sparkle and doing some activities. No test this week.

We will spend this week finishing up writing an expository paper.

Classroom Chatter
Monday the Indian Prairie and Downers Grove libraries will visit to tell us all about their summer reading program!

Thursday we have our bowling field trip in the morning. In the afternoon, our 2nd grade pen pals come to visit!

Spelling :: We are done with spelling for the year. We will use this time to do word work and phonics.

Reading :: We will continue with our unit of Fairy Tales as we compare and contrast 2 Cinderella stories. We also start our mystery unit!

English :: Due to early dismissal on Friday and Jr. Achievement, I moved the English test to Monday 5/21.
We then will do a writing unit on expository papers.

Social Studies :: We will finish up our Eye on Egypt books by learning about King Tut and Cleopatra.

Science :: We will start our last unit on the scientific method. There will not be a final test on this unit.

Math :: There will be a CYP on L. 1-5 on Monday, a CYP on L. 6-8 on Thursday and the chapter 9 test on Friday. We will spend the rest of the year doing long division. There will not a test on division. The final test is chapter 9.

A big thank you to all of you that came to our Spring Open House last Thursday. I hope you enjoyed it! It was great seeing everyone!!! Hard to believe we are in our final stretch! Yikes!!!

On Monday, the third grade will listen to a nurse come talk to us about oral hygiene. Ask your child about it!

Spelling

L. 22 words end with -er or -le. The test will be on Friday. The homework is due Friday. We will pretest Monday.

Reading

We will continue with our poetry unit.

English

We will finish up with our friendly letter unit with a test on Friday. Students will have to identify the 5 parts of a friendly letter: heading, greeting, body, closing, and signature. They will also proofread a letter and make corrections. Your child will be bringing home an envelope on Monday. Please help them address it correctly and put a stamp on it.

Science

We will begin our next unit of study on chapter 14: heat, light, & sound.

Social Studies:

We will be continuing with Chicago. There will not be a part III test. I will take some pages in the packet for a grade.

Math

We are all done with mad minutes. Please continue to practice both multiplication and division facts. We will finish up chapter 11 with a CYP Thursday. This week we will be studying solid figures and volume. The test will be the following Tuesday 4/24.

Tuesday of last week, my class "EGGED" Principal Schultz!!!!! Let me further explain... Look closely, you'll see Principal Schultz is holding a sign that is taped to a giant, hot pink Easter egg. The sign says "You've Been Egged" and inside the egg contains letters to her from my students. The letters used "egg-cellent" words to express how "egg-straordinary" we think she is! ;) Thanks to a great blog I follow, Lesson Plan SOS, that gave me this "egg-stra" special writing idea and made my class "egg-cited" about writing her letters! We hope she enjoyed it as much as we did!!!


Open House: Please mark your calendars for our Spring Open House on Thurs. 4/12 from 6:30-8:00. Come visit your child's classrooms, visit 4th and 5th grade classrooms, shop at the book fair, and stay for ice cream! Our theme is Chicago, so your child (and family members!) can wear their favorite Chicago sports team apparel. Hope to see you there!

Book orders went home this week.They are due online by Sunday 3/18. If you don't order online, send in orders on Monday. I'll enter orders Monday after school.

GLUE STICKS! We are VERY low on glue sticks and have several projects we will be working on now until the end of the year. If you child can bring in one or some, that would be great! Thank you. Also, now is a good time to ask your child how their "supplies" are. It is common to be low on dry erase markers and pencils. :) Thanks!

Spring Conferences are being held the week of March 5th. Conferences are mainly for math parents. You should be hearing from your child's math teacher by today if you haven't already. Starting Monday, 2/27, I will open up any of the remaining spots for my homeroom. I will send you an email to sign up online. Spring conferences are being scheduled on an as needed basis. I will not be requesting a conference for all students. However, if you feel a conference is necessary at this time, then you can reserve your time starting 2/27!

Social Studies
I extended culture day to two days instead of one. I had the students pick which day they wanted to present. We will have half the class present Monday and the rest of the class on Tuesday. We will spend the rest of the week finishing up chapter 3. A study guide will come home mid week. The test will be sometime the following week. Date to still to be determined of the week of Feb 6th.

We will take a division 4 mad minute. This week we will finish up chapter 6 with time and elapsed time. There will be a CYP on the 2nd half of chapter 6 on Wednesday and the test will be Friday. Students will be allowed to use measurement notes and calculators on both CYP and test.

We didn't start our novel studies yet. We spent a lot of time talking about questioning and doing extended responses last week. This week we will dive into our new novel and work on making connections. We also just finished a WONDERFUL book, The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane. It was my first time reading it and the kids and I LOVED IT! I recommend it to anyone!!! Ask your child about it. It is my new favorite book. :) We will start a new read aloud by the same author, Kate DiCamillo this week: The Tale of Desperaux.

English

We will continue with verbs and work on the verbs in the past tense.

Social Studies

How are the culture day projects coming along? Hopefully well! Looking forward to our culture day on 1/30. In the meantime, we will wrap up chapter 3 with learning how an immigrant becomes a citizen.

Science

We will finish up learning about weather. This will complete chapter 9. A study guide went home Friday in the science folder. The test will be Thursday 1/26.

The top 2 spellers in our classroom will advance to the grade level bee. Then the grade level bee will be held 1/19. The district bee will be 1/24.
